Note: To use OpenSesame course packages, you must upload them to a learning platform, such as a Learning Management System (LMS). For information about uploading, see your platform’s documentation.
If you use an OpenSesame integration, select Send to Integration instead of Download Packages.
Single course packages can be downloaded from either a List or a course page. To download a course, you must have an active license for it.
- If you include metadata, you must extract the downloaded file to access the files within. When you download from a List, metadata is automatically included.
- If you do not include metadata, you download a ready-to-use file. To do this, download from a course page.
In this guide:
Download a course from a List
Note: For an introduction to Lists, see How to use OpenSesame Lists.
Log in to OpenSesame and select My Lists:
To open a List, click its title:
Select your course, then the Deliver Courses button that appears:
Note: If you use Pay Per Use (PPU) licenses, an Add to Library button also appears. If the course isn’t in your library, click that button first.
If you have multiple license types for the course, choose which type to use.
Next, select the Download Packages delivery option. If a different option appears, expand the menu and choose Download Packages from there:
Note: For more information, see OpenSesame’s course delivery options.
Confirm that the file type your learning platform needs is selected. If not, select the correct one, then click Default.
It’s important to keep the file type consistent, as learning platforms can handle them differently. If you start using one and decide to switch, contact support@opensesame.com first.
Click Download:
A progress bar appears as the request processes. When it finishes, you return to the List and a zip file downloads to your computer.
This zip file contains multiple files, including a CSV of metadata. It must be extracted before the course zip file it contains can be accessed and uploaded to a learning platform.
Download a single course from its page
When you download a course from its details page, you can control whether to include a CSV file of metadata.
Log in to OpenSesame and navigate to a course page:
- If the course already appears in your dashboard, visit your dashboard and click its title.
- If not, use the search bar to browse the OpenSesame catalog. When you find a course, click its title.
On the course page, if you have an active license for the course, a Deliver Course button appears. Click it:
Note: If you use Pay Per Use (PPU) licenses and the course isn’t in your library, an Add to Library button appears instead. Click that first, then return and click Deliver Course.
If you have multiple license types for the course, choose which type to use.
Next, select the Download Packages delivery option. If a different option appears, expand the menu and choose Download Packages from there:
Note: For more information, see OpenSesame’s course delivery options.

The next steps depend on whether you included metadata.
- If you included metadata, the zip file has an additional layer, and the filename begins with the download date. The file must be extracted before the course zip it contains can be uploaded to a learning platform. See the following section for extraction steps.
- If you did not include metadata, the zip file contains nothing but the course. In that case, the filename uses the course’s title. The file is ready to upload to your learning platform and must not be extracted.
For information about uploading, see your platform’s documentation. If you experience a problem downloading files from OpenSesame, contact OpenSesame Support for assistance.
Extract the file
When a course package is downloaded from a List, or downloaded with metadata from a course page, the file contains an individual course zip file, a CSV file of metadata, and a ReadMe text file of general information.
Since this “parent” zip contains multiple files, it must be extracted before the individual course zip file can be accessed and uploaded to a learning platform.
PC extraction steps
By default, Windows saves the downloaded file to the Downloads folder. If your PC is set up to save downloads to a different folder, look there instead.
On Windows 10 and 11, select File Explorer:
Next, select the Downloads folder:
The filename of a zip with metadata begins with its download date. Locate the file, right-click it, and select Extract All:
Select a destination folder and click Extract:
The file decompresses into a folder. The folder contains an individual course zip file (titled with a unique identifier), a CSV file of metadata, and a ReadMe text file.
Do not extract the individual course zip file. It must remain as-is to work in a learning platform.
The CSV file of metadata begins with the course’s title in the first column. This is followed by the course’s unique identifier (“GUID”) in the second column, which matches its zip’s filename. Other columns provide the course description, publisher name, estimated seat time (in minutes), languages, and more.
When you have the individual course zip file, it can be uploaded to your learning platform. For information about uploading, see your platform’s documentation.

Mac extraction steps
By default, MacOS saves the downloaded file to the Downloads folder. If your Mac is set up to save downloads to a different folder, look there instead.
In MacOS, select Finder, then the Downloads folder:
The filename of a zip with metadata begins with its download date. Locate the file and double-click to extract it.
