Note: If you use one of OpenSesame's integrations, select Send to Integration instead of Download Packages.
To download a single course package, use either a List or a course page. You need a license for the course. You can download in either the AICC or SCORM 1.2 file format, two common elearning standards.
To use a course package, upload it to a learning platform, such as a learning management system (LMS). For upload steps, which vary by platform, see your platform’s documentation.
- If you include metadata or download from a List, extract the downloaded file to access the package to upload.
- If you download from a course page and do not include metadata, the package is ready to upload.
In this guide:
Download a course package from a List
Note: For an introduction to Lists, see How to use OpenSesame Lists.
Log in to OpenSesame and select My Lists.
To open a List, select its title.
Select your course, then the Deliver Courses button that appears.
Note: If you use Pay Per Use (PPU) licenses, an Add to Library button also appears. If the course isn’t in your library, select that button first.
If you don't have a license for the course, a notification appears and you return to the List.
Select the Download Packages delivery option.
If a different option appears, expand the menu and choose Download Packages from there.
Confirm that your learning platform's preferred file type is selected. To set the current selection as the default, select Make Default.
Keep the file type consistent.
- Some platforms identify learners differently for each file type, and switching can cause learners to use more than one seat.
- If you start with one type and decide to switch, contact support@opensesame.com first.
Select Download.
If you have multiple license types for the course, choose which type to use and select Next.
A progress bar appears. When it finishes, a zip file downloads to your device.
This zip file contains multiple files, including a CSV of metadata. It must be extracted before the course zip file it contains can be accessed and uploaded to a learning platform.
Download a package from a course page
Log in to OpenSesame and navigate to a course page.
- If the course already appears in your dashboard, you can select its title there.
- If the course is not in your dashboard, use the search bar to browse the OpenSesame catalog. When you find a course, select its title.
On the course page, if you have an active license for the course, a Deliver Course button appears. Select it.
Note: If you use Pay Per Use (PPU) licenses and the course isn’t in your library, an Add to Library button appears instead. Select that first, then return and select Deliver Course.
Select the Download Packages delivery option.
If a different option appears, expand the menu and choose Download Packages from there.
Confirm that your learning platform's preferred file type is selected.
- To include a CSV file of metadata, select Include course information (.CSV).
- To set the current selection as the default, select Make Default.

Select Download.
If you have multiple license types for a course, choose which type to use and select Next.
A progress bar appears. When it finishes, a zip file downloads to your device.
The next steps depend on whether you included metadata.
-
If you included metadata, the zip file has an additional layer, and the filename begins with the download date.
- The zip file must be extracted before the course zip file it contains can be uploaded to a learning platform.
- See extraction steps.
-
If you did not include metadata, the zip file contains nothing but the course. In that case, the filename uses the course title. The file is ready to upload to your learning platform and must not be extracted.
- For upload steps, which vary by platform, see your platform’s documentation.
- If you experience a problem downloading a package, contact OpenSesame Support at support@opensesame.com.
Extract the file
When a course package is downloaded from a List or downloaded with metadata from a course page, the zip file contains:
- An individual course zip file
- A CSV file of metadata
- A ReadMe text file of general information
This “parent” zip file must be extracted before the individual course zip file can be accessed and uploaded to a learning platform.
PC extraction steps
By default, Windows saves downloads to the Downloads folder. If your PC uses a different folder, check there instead.
On Windows 10 or 11, select File Explorer.
Select Downloads.
The filename of a zip with metadata begins with the download date. Locate the file, right-click it, and select Extract All.
Select a destination folder and select Extract.
The file decompresses into a folder, which contains an individual course zip file. That course zip file uses a unique identifier as its filename, such as 1a26c1ac-05d1-6aa4-4d3d-5e405d46222e. This is used because multiple courses can have the same title.
Do not extract the individual course zip file. It must remain as-is to work in a learning platform.
The CSV file of metadata begins with the course title in the first column. The course’s unique identifier (“GUID”) appears in the second column and matches the filename of the course zip file. Other columns include a thumbnail image, course description, publisher name, estimated seat time (in minutes), languages, and more.
You can now upload the individual zip file to your learning platform.
- For upload steps, which vary by platform, see your platform’s documentation.
- If you experience a problem downloading packages, contact OpenSesame Support at support@opensesame.com.
Mac extraction steps
By default, MacOS saves the downloaded file to the Downloads folder. If your Mac uses a different folder, check there instead.
In MacOS, select Finder, then Downloads.
The filename of a zip with metadata begins with the download date. Locate the file and double-click to extract it.
