Note: For a testing checklist, see Testing best practices.
The OpenSesame Test Course, also known internally as Testy McTestface, speeds up and simplifies quality-assurance (QA) testing. It checks for compatibility with all OpenSesame Plus publishers.
We strongly recommend testing courses in your IT environments before distributing them. It helps catch issues early, support a smooth training experience, and maintain confidence in your training program.

What it tests
The OpenSesame Test Course checks whether a device and network:
- Meet OpenSesame's system requirements, including most required browser settings.
- Can reach OpenSesame Plus publishers' content servers.
The course also sends a completion and score (85%) to your learning platform, so you can confirm reporting works as expected.
If your learners use multiple browsers, use each browser type to launch the course. The course can only check the browser in use.
What it doesn't test
- Publishers not included in OpenSesame Plus.
- Settings of devices and browsers not used to launch it.
- Progress bookmarking.
- Cross-site tracking on Apple mobile devices.
- Autoplay in Firefox.
- Whether a VPN is active.
- Desktop operating system versions or types.
- Mobile operating system versions, screen sizes, or zoom level.
- Subdomains needed only for users who log in to opensesame.com.
In addition, though the test course works on mobile devices, its design is not optimized for small screens.
Where to use it
Whenever possible, run the test course in the IT environments your learners will use. This may include firewalls, VPNs, or bandwidth restrictions.
For a list of factors to consider, see Testing best practices.
Where to get it
- Visit the OpenSesame marketplace page for the OpenSesame Test Course.
- Use the primary button. It says either Get This Course or Deliver Course.
If you don’t have a license for the course, select Get This Course.
- Decide how many seats you need.
- If multiple people will test, you need a seat for each.
- If you use OpenSesame Plus, each person who tests the course will occupy a Plus seat. If they would not otherwise occupy a seat, contact us after testing is complete to reclaim their seat.
- Add the course to your cart.
- Check out for $0.00.
- Return to the course page.
When you have a license, select Deliver course.
- For a stand-alone learning platform, choose the Download Packages option and the file format your platform needs. For more about downloading, see How to download a single course package from a List or course page.
- For an integrated learning platform, choose the Send to Integration option and select your learning platform’s name. For more information, see How to send courses to a learning platform using a List. (The delivery tools are the same.)
How to use it
After you deliver the course to your learning platform, launch it and run the test.
- Find the course in your platform and enroll in it.
- Many platforms allow previews, however previews don’t provide completions or scores.
- Each learning platform has its own enrollment process. For more information, see your platform’s documentation.
- Launch the course.
- Follow the prompts and allow the test to complete.
- Review the results, then take action to resolve any issues.
The course opens on an introduction page. To begin a test, click Let’s Get Started.
An animation appears while the course checks for system requirements and hundreds of content sources. This takes less than 5 minutes.
Initial results
When the checks finish, a brief tune plays and results appear.
The page contains:
- Results - A summary of findings.
- Completion check - A reminder to confirm that your learning platform shows a completion and a score (85%).
- Publisher requirements - If a publisher’s content source can’t connect, the publisher name appears.
- System requirements - Browser, bandwidth, and operating system results appear as a percentage.
- Next steps - If issues were found, select Download Report for a spreadsheet (CSV file) of results and see the Next steps section.
- Exit course - Ends the session and closes the course.
- Run again - Restarts the test without ending the session.
You can close and relaunch the course as many times as needed.
Next steps
The steps to resolve an issue depend on what kind of issue it is.
1. Completion check
The results page always includes a reminder to check for a completion and a score in your learning platform. OpenSesame can confirm that a completion was sent, but can’t confirm it was received.
As a learning administrator:
- Navigate to where completions appear in your platform.
- Look for an entry for “OpenSesame Test Course.”
- When you find it, confirm it has a score (85%).
If you don’t find an entry or a score, please contact your learning platform’s support team to assist.
If you need to retest for completion, contact us to reset your progress. (All other tests reset on their own.)
2. Publisher requirements
If a publisher’s content source can’t connect, their name appears. If many can’t connect, a note may say the list is shortened. For the full list of names, see the downloadable report.
If a source fails, it is usually due to a block on the network level.
- Share the downloadable report with your IT team. Any subdomain marked "Fail" should be allowed across your organization.
- If you don’t plan to use the affected publisher(s), no action is needed. Still, to simplify adding courses later, we recommend allowing all OpenSesame Plus publisher domains.
3. System requirements
If the test results inside the course are below 100%, work with your IT team to resolve any issues. (The completion score sent to your learning platform is always 85%. That score does not reflect test results.)
Depending on your IT team, many of the following system requirements can be managed on a policy level across your organization. Others are resolved on an individual level.
Often resolved by IT:
- Meet minimum screen size.
- Allow pop-ups.
- Allow cross-site tracking.
- Allow third-party cookies.
- Use recommended browser versions.
- Meet recommended bandwidth speed.
Resolved by individual:
- Set browser’s zoom to 100%.
- Confirm audio can be heard.
Successful results
When an environment fully supports OpenSesame Plus content, success messages appear in the Publisher Requirements and System Requirements sections. (If a few publishers can’t connect but you don’t plan to use them, you might not need a success message in Publisher Requirements.)
When requirements are met and your learning platform shows a completion and a score, testing is complete.
- If there are other factors to test, such as a VPN or a different browser, change your setup and relaunch the course from there.
- If there are no other factors to test, you’re done!
