Learning Paths allow you to collect courses around any topic and assign them to learners. You can also create groups of courses within the same path and rearrange the order of courses.
In this article:
- Create a new Learning Path
- Update a Learning Path’s title, description, image, or status
- Add or remove groups or courses in a Learning Path
- Change the order of courses

Create a new Learning Path
From your Learning Administrator dashboard, open the Admin Tools and then navigate to the Courses tab:
Select the Learning Paths option:
This page will display any Learning Paths you create, whether or not they are active. Click the Create Learning Path button:
This will bring you to a creation page for the Learning Path’s basic details: its title, description, and cover image. Fill them in however you prefer:
Adding a custom cover image is optional. To add one you would need a JPG or PNG file, and for best results it would have a 16:9 aspect ratio and at least 1280x720 pixels. (The maximum file size is 64MB.) If you leave it blank, a generic placeholder image will appear.
At the bottom of this page you can set whether the Learning Path should be active. Even when Learning Paths are active, Learners will not see any path that they have not been assigned.
Once satisfied with your settings, click the Save changes button:
This will return you to the main Learning Paths page. The new Learning Path will now appear first, and its image, title, and Active toggle—seen when hovering a cursor over a Learning Path’s card—will reflect your changes.
Update a Learning Path’s title, description, image, or status
If at any point you want to adjust a Learning Path’s basic details, simply hover your cursor over its card and follow the Edit Path link:
This will return you to the same editing page from before, where you can update the Learning Path’s title, description, cover image, or Active status, then save your changes.
You can also update a Learning Path’s Active status from the main Learning Paths page via its toggle:
To adjust a Learning Path’s contents, read on!
Add or remove groups or courses in a Learning Path
Now that the new Learning Path exists, it is possible to add courses to it. To get started, click the Edit Course List link:
This will bring you to the Learning Path’s course management page, which has two columns:
The first column, Courses in path, will be blank aside from an empty, non-sequential group. It will soon hold the Learning Path’s group(s) and courses.
The second column, Prospective courses, holds each course that has been added to CourseCloud and is available to assign to learners. This column is topped by a Filter field, which can be used to search for specific courses.
Add, edit, or delete groups
The untitled, non-sequential starter group can be updated by selecting its gear icon:
This will open the editing page for this group’s basic details: its name and whether its courses must be taken in order.
Note: If a sequential group is followed by non-sequential groups, learners will be able to skip ahead to the non-sequential ones.
Click the Save changes button once satisfied with your settings:
This will return you to the Learning Path’s course management page, which will reflect your changes:
Add another group at any time via the Add group button at top:
Each newly added group will appear underneath any existing group(s):
Delete a group by selecting its trash can icon:
Note that deleting a group that contains courses will return those courses to the Prospective courses column.
Add or remove courses
When you locate a course you want to use, there are two ways to add it to your Learning Path.
First, you can click the “add” icon at top left of the course’s image:
Second, you can click and hold the course’s “move” icon, then drag the course to where you want it in the path:
Whenever a course is added, a success message will briefly appear and then fade out:
Note: To avoid repetition for learners, each course can only appear once per Learning Path.
To remove a course from a path, click the trash can icon at top left of the course image:
If a path has already been assigned to learners, adding or removing courses from it will update the completion percentage that in-progress learners can see. (This percentage is based on the total number of courses in a path, not on seat time.)
Change the order of courses
You can move a course within its current group or move it to a different group in the same Learning Path. To rearrange where a course lands, click and hold its “move” icon, then drag it to where you want it to appear:
For a Learning Path that you want learners to follow in order, be sure to confirm that all of its groups are sequential, as learners are able to jump to any non-sequential group in a path. Any sequential group has the label “(Sequential)” after its name, and this setting can be adjusted via the group’s gear icon.
Duplicate a Learning Path
If you have a Learning Path you like and you don’t want to create the next one from scratch, simply duplicate an existing path from the main Learning Paths page. Duplicated paths will have the same courses, groups, and path image, however any path assignments will not be copied.
Hover over your target path and select Duplicate Path:
A confirmation prompt will appear, reiterating what will and will not be copied. To proceed, click the Duplicate Path button:
A ditto of your selected path will then appear, with “Copy” at the end of its title:
As usual, any title or image can be updated by hovering over a path and selecting Edit Path.
Delete a Learning Path
Before deleting a Learning Path, which cannot be undone, note that deleting it would also delete its dedicated reporting. (Individual course reporting would remain.) So if you might need to refer back to a path's reporting in the future, please use the Active toggle to set the path to inactive.
If you decide to permanently delete a Learning Path rather than set it to inactive, hover over the path and select Delete Path:
A confirmation prompt will appear with a reminder that the deletion will be permanent. To proceed, click the Delete Path button, and the path will immediately disappear.
