An LMS, or Learning Management System, is software used to share learning content with learners. While OpenSesame isn't an LMS, we provide elearning content that can be used in an LMS or in similar learning platforms.
Learning platforms vary, and some are called Learning Experience Platforms (LXPs). Overall, they help Learning and Development (L&D) administrators:
- Organize elearning content and deliver it to learners.
- Track course completions.
- Create training plans.
- Create reports on learner activity.
Some platforms also have social features.
The Association for Talent Development (ATD), formerly ASTD, offers the following description in their Field Guide to Learning Management Systems:
While there are several definitions of a learning management system (LMS), the basic description is a software application that automates the administration, tracking, and reporting of training events. However, it’s not that simple. A robust LMS should be able to do the following:
- Centralize and automate administration
- Use self-service and self-guided services
- Assemble and deliver learning content rapidly
- Consolidate training initiatives on a scalable web-based platform
- Support portability and standards
- Personalize content and enable knowledge reuse.
More important, an LMS should integrate with other enterprise application solutions used by HR and accounting, enabling management to measure the impact, effectiveness, and overall cost of training initiatives.
