Simon basics
Where can I find Simon onboarding and training materials?
Our onboarding materials are consolidated in our Knowledge base. You’ll find FAQs, written training guides, the schedule for onboarding webinars and interactive product demos.
Where do the videos and images live?
Videos and course assets are served from the Simon cloud environment directly into your LMS via a Global Content Delivery Network
What file types can I upload in Simon?
.wav and .mp4 for video; .png and .jpg for images
Is Simon WCAG compliant?
Yes.
Does Simon come with any preloaded assets or stock image libraries?
Today, we recommend using a service like Unsplash.com to get stock images to use in your courses. In the future we will explore options for direct integration with Stock Photo, Video, and Audio libraries.
What happens to my courses if I decide in the future to end my contract with OpenSesame?
Your courses are yours and you are able to take them with you. However you must have a Simon license if you want to continue to make changes to the courses using the Simon Authoring Platform. You will always be able to modify the source code for your own courses outside of Simon.
Is the asset storage in Simon unlimited? Will we ever get charged if we need to use a lot of storage?
For the time being we do not plan to charge for storage. However, as a new product we will have to evaluate costs as the platform grows.
Getting courses in and out of Simon
How do I get my courses from Simon into my LMS?
Courses created in Simon will be placed into a private “My Courses” section in the OpenSesame Catalog that you can upload into your LMS through your standard course upload procedure (SCORM package upload or integration). See instructions here.
Can Simon provide a SCORM/AICC file?
Yes. You can download the AICC file directly from the Course Manager in the platform. For SCORM you can send to OpenSesame and then download as a SCORM file the same way you do all your OpenSesame courses.
Translations and localization
What’s the difference between translation and localization?
Translation is the process of directly changing text from one language to another. Localization digs deeper into cultural nuances and visual factors. Localization takes into account currency, dates, measurement units, names, images, gestures, music, accents, etc.
How long does it take for the tool to translate courses?
- For the admin, the translation for assets will take approximately as long as the assets timing. E.g. A 10 minute video will take around 10 minutes to process per language.
- Once a course is translated and published, Learners can easily switch languages and the experience is instantaneous.
How does the translation work? How accurate is it?
- Simon fully supports Human or AI Translation
- For Human Translators, Simon provides industry standard file formats that translation companies accept. Once they are complete with the translation it is a simple upload process to make them available in the course.
- For AI translation, Simon automatically translates course content including text content, video content (captions, subtitles and audio), and narrated audio content (captions, subtitles and audio).
- Simon uses AI to translate all aspects of your course, from course text to course interface to video and audio assets.
- Neither Human nor AI Translators are ever 100% accurate and quality can also vary by language. We always recommend that Course Authors have qualified fluent speakers review the translated courses prior to publication
- Simon offers simple tools to enable proof reading and editing of both Human and AI translated course content.
Can Simon edit or translate existing OpenSesame courses?
No, it is up to the course author to add languages to their course.
What if I need a language that is not in the current Simon suite?
You can download the course content from Simon and have it translated through other services.
Collaboration and user management
Can we collaborate in Simon?
Yes! Simon does not charge per author, so you can add as many of your colleagues to your organization as you want. When you do, they will be able to edit all courses in your organization and create their own courses within it.
Can a collaborator be reactivated?
Yes. If a collaborator has been deactivated by someone they can be reactivated from the page under “Manage team.”
Does someone need a Simon account to view the course if it is shared with them?
Anyone can view a shared link without a Simon account.
